What Is a Fusible Link?

A fusible link is a safety device in fire sprinkler heads. A fire sprinkler fusible link activates when an area reaches a high temperature. This device consists of two strips joined by a fusible alloy. At a specific heat, the alloy will melt, triggering the sprinkler system.

Our Selection of Globe Fusible Links

Specializing in fusible links for restaurant kitchen equipment, we offer patented Globe products that work for any kind of hood fire protection system for commercial and domestic applications. With a foolproof Quality Management System and excellent warranties, you can confidently rely on Globe fusible links.

National Fire Supply stocks an array of Globe fusible links made from various components like bronze, brass and stainless steel for different operating temperatures ranging from 135 to 500 degrees.

We offer Globe fusible links for fire dampers, kitchens, fire doors, industrial fire protection systems and fire roof vents. We also provide globe test links, allowing you to test your detection lines economically.

Parts of a Fire Extinguisher

Each separate parts of a fire extinguisher contribute to storing, expelling or informing — knowing about each component will help you use it safely and effectively. Here are the parts of a fire extinguisher and how they work:

  • Cylindrical tank: This is the main body of the fire extinguisher, storing the extinguisher agent and propellant under the correct amount of pressure. The tank is often made from steel, making it durable — even small tanks can be heavy.
  • Valve: The valve controls the release of the extinguishing agent and connects the handle and operating lever.
  • Carry handle: Used for carrying and holding the fire extinguisher, the handle allows for easy gripping, lifting and carrying.
  • Operating lever: The operating lever is the handle that, when squeezed, activates the fire extinguisher. It requires the pull pin to be removed first before activating.
  • Pull pin: This is the metal pin that must be removed before operating the extinguisher. Also known as the locking pin, the pull pin prevents accidental discharge, such as accidentally squeezing the lever down when you’re only trying to carry the extinguisher.
  • Tamper seal: A plastic seal that keeps the pull pin in place so it doesn’t fall out accidentally.
  • Pressure gauge: The pressure gauge is a circular gauge attached to the outside of the valve, showing whether the extinguisher has proper pressure to release the agent. A needle in the green zone means it is properly charged. Note that CO2 extinguishers do not have pressure gauges.
  • Discharge hose: This is the hose that allows the extinguishing agent to travel from the tank to the base of the fire, helping to aim.
  • Discharge nozzle: Attached to the end of the hose, the nozzle controls the dispersing of the agent.

Of course, there’s also the extinguishing agent, or the chemical stored inside the tank that extinguishes the fire, as well as the propellant, or the gas that expels the agent from the tank. Understanding these parts can help you confidently use a fire extinguisher in an emergency.

At National Fire Supply, we provide various parts and accessories for fire extinguishers, from hooks and pull pins to covers and cabinets.

Informative Parts of a Fire Extinguisher

Along with the functioning parts of the extinguisher, there are also informative ones, including:

  • Instruction label: Properly functioning fire extinguishers will have a legible instruction label detailing how to use the extinguisher and the type of fire it can be used on.
  • Monthly inspection tag: This tag allows whoever is responsible for the monthly inspection to record the date of the monthly check and the initials of the person who inspected it. The tag helps you comply with your local fire protection regulations, and monthly inspections are required.
  • Annual inspection tag: This tag is where a professional fire and security provider records the date and important information about the required annual maintenance inspection of your fire extinguisher. This tag helps comply with local codes and make sure your extinguisher is getting the proper care to operate correctly when needed.
